FNLG 101B.01B: Introduction to a Salish Language I : hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (Musqueam).
Term 1 (3 credits)
An introduction to hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓/Musqueam, the Coast Salish language traditionally spoken in and around Vancouver. Emphasis on accurate pronunciation and listening skills, conversational ability, basic literacy skills, an understanding of basic grammatical structures, and the study of oral traditions in their cultural context. No prior knowledge of the language is assumed.
Time: Tues and Thurs 4:30-6:00 pm

Location: Musqueam Indian Reserve adjacent to UBC South Campus: see NOTE below for directions.

FNLG 102B.01B: Introduction to a Salish Language II : hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (Musqueam).
Term 2 (3 credits)
Continued introduction to hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓/Musqueam.
Prerequisite: FNLG 101B.
Time: Tues and Thurs 4:30-6:00 pm

FNLG 201B.01B: Intermediate Salish Language I
Term 1 (3 Credits)
An intermediate level study of hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓/Musqueam. Emphasis on increasing fluency in conversational ability, enhancing pronunciation and comprehension skills, expanding vocabulary, extending literacy and grammatical understanding, and further study of oral traditions in their cultural context.
Prerequisite: FNLG 102B.
Time: Mon & Wed 4:30-6:00 pm

FNLG 202B.01B: Intermediate Salish Language II
Term 2 (3 Credits)
Continued intermediate study of hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓/Musqueam.
Prerequisite: FNLG 201B.
Time: Mon & Wed 4:30-6:00 pm

Note: All FNLG hən̓q̓əmin̓əm language courses with a .01B section number are held off campus, hosted by the Musqueam Indian Band on the MIB Reserve, directly adjacent to UBC, south of Marine Drive: see area and detailed maps. 


FNLG 101B.02B: Introduction to a Salish Language I : hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (Musqueam).
Term 1 (3 credits)
An introduction to hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓/Musqueam, the Coast Salish language traditionally spoken throughout the lower Fraser Valley, from Kwantlen to Vancouver. Emphasis on accurate pronunciation and listening skills, conversational ability, basic literacy skills, an understanding of basic grammatical structures, and the study of oral traditions in their cultural context. No prior knowledge of the language is assumed.
Time: Mon and Thurs 5:00-6:30 pm
Teachers: Fern Gabriel, Kwantlen First Nation
Location: Kwantlen First Nation Board, 23690 Gabriel Lane, Kwantlen First Nation.

Cree: Plains Algonquian

FNLG 111C Introduction to an Algonquian Language I
Term 1 (3 Credits)
An introduction to Cree, an Algonquian language as spoken in western Canada. Emphasis on accurate pronunciation and listening skills, conversational ability, basic literacy skills, an understanding of basic grammatical structures, and the study of oral traditions in their cultural context. No prior knowledge of the language is assumed.
Mondays and Thursdays 7:00-9:00 pm
Location: Urban Native Youth Association, 1618 Hastings Street, East Vancouver

Endangered Language Documentation Revitalization

FNLG 480A: Endangered Language Documentation and Revitalization (3 Credits)
A critical study of the historical, social, cultural, and political, and economic factors impacting on language loss, retention and revival. No prerequisites.
May 9 - June 17, 2011
Tuesdays and Thursdays 7:00-10:00 pm
